I am THRILLED with our new website and hope that you are enjoying it too! Each month I will provide you with useful information on choosing a camp: trends in camping, different types of camps available, exciting teen programs, etc. But for my first blog entry, I would like to share a little bit about a new program we are launching.
In the spirit of the season, I am launching a new program: Charity Begins with CAMP. Each month Camp Specialists will recognize a worthwhile charity and donate a portion of our monthly proceeds to that cause. This is my way of giving back to the community and connecting on a more personal level with you, our families.
For the month of January, Camp Specialists will be donating to Foundation Fighting Blindness, which funds research for a variety of eye conditions, including Macular Degeneration, Retinitis Pigmentosa and other retinal diseases. I was made aware of this great organization through one of my client families. Here is their story:
When Joshua was a toddler, his mom Helaine noticed that he became anxious when transitioning – especially when moving between light and dark settings. He also experienced difficulty navigating in the dark. After a routine eye exam, the ophthalmologist handed Helaine a slip of paper with two words written on it: “Retinitis Pigmentosa.”
Retinitis Pigmentosa, or RP, is a group of genetic eye conditions that can lead to incurable blindness. Affected individuals first experience night blindness, followed by a reduction of their peripheral visual field, (also known as tunnel vision.) And sometimes, late in the course of the disease, affected individuals can even lose their vision completely.
Helaine and her husband Bill have an amazingly upbeat attitude about their son’s condition. They contacted us at Camp Specialists three years ago to find a camp that would be able to accommodate Josh’s vision impairment –- but in a manner sensitive to Josh’s need to feel like “a regular kid.” I personally spoke to several directors to find just the right fit. He started at a camp in Pennsylvania two summers ago and it has been a very positive experience for him.
Book a sleepaway via Camp Specialists in January, and we will donate a portion of our proceeds to Foundation Fighting Blindness. Our service is FREE and you will be doing your part to help Joshua and other people who are battling vision loss.
If you are connected to a charity, please let me know. I would love to be made aware of causes near & dear to your heart, so that I can publicize them and donate to them. And obviously, if your child has a special need, please know that there is a camp to suit every child. Give me a call and I will help you find that special place.
