How to pack and prep – without losing your mind.
You got the welcome packet. You found the packing list. And now you're staring at it thinking: how is all of this going to fit, and also, does my child really need seven pairs of the same shorts?
Camp packing is a rite of passage for parents. Here's how to get through it with your sanity intact.
Start Early
Don't leave packing for the week before drop-off. Start a few months out by gathering items and making note of what you still need to buy. Maybe buy the cool sweatshirt they’ve been eyeing and gift it to them around the holiday season in anticipation of camp.
Follow the List & Read It Carefully
Most camps send a very specific packing list for a reason. Items like plain white t-shirts for tie dye, specific bedding sizes, or a required type of water bottle aren't simply suggestions. Read it twice.
Label Everything. Seriously, Everything.
Socks. Underwear. Water bottles. Sunscreen. Labels save the lost-and-found from becoming a permanent residence for your child's belongings. Iron-on, stick-on, or a Sharpie – whatever works, just do it. A Camp Specialist tip is that silver sharpie works so well on black clothing!
What to Leave Home
Expensive jewelry, money, electronics (unless permitted), and anything your child would be heartbroken to lose. Camp is wonderful but things still can get lost or damaged when borrowed.
Let Your Child Help Pack
Especially for first-timers, involving your child in packing builds excitement and ownership. They'll know where things are, feel more prepared, and arrive with a sense of readiness knowing what is theirs.
The Bottom Line
A well-packed trunk won't make or break the summer but an organized, prepared arrival sets your child up to walk in feeling confident, not scattered.
