Day Camp: What's in Our Backpack?

A practical (and honest) packing guide for day camp mornings.

Day camp is a different beast than sleepaway. Your child comes home every night, which means every morning is a fresh pack. And every morning is also a potential chaos spiral if you don't have a system.

Here's what actually belongs in that backpack.

The Essentials

  • Water bottle. Labeled, insulated if possible, and big enough to last the day. This is the most important item.
  • Sunscreen. Apply before they leave and pack more for reapplication.
  • Lunch and snacks. Know the camp's policy on allergens, nuts, and what's allowed.
  • Change of clothes. At least one full extra outfit. Trust us.
  • Swimsuit and towel. Pack multiple swimsuits (many camps suggest two per day). Check your camp's packing list to see whether towels are provided or need to be packed.

Camp-Specific Items

  • Any specific shoes required (water shoes, cleats, etc.)
  • Art smock or old clothes if there's a messy activity day
  • A book or quiet activity for transition times
  • Camp colored items or any theme-specific clothing for special days

What to Leave Home

  • Expensive electronics
  • Irreplaceable items
  • Anything your child would be upset about losing

The Morning Routine

Pack the night before. It sounds simple, but a packed bag by the door transforms chaotic mornings into calm ones. Make it a habit by the end of the first week and you'll never go back.

The Bottom Line

Day camp mornings run better with a system. A little prep the night before means your child walks out the door ready and you start your day without the scramble.
