How to say goodbye without falling apart or making it harder for your child.
Drop-off day is one of those moments that sounds simple and somehow feels enormous. You've done all the prep. The trunk is packed. And now it's actually happening.
Here's what we've learned about making drop-off go smoothly from personal experience and from walking hundreds of families through it…
Arrive Calm
Your child is reading you. If you drive up relaxed and excited, they will too. If you're visibly nervous or sad, they'll mirror that. Take a breath before you get out of the car.
Keep Goodbyes Short
Long, drawn-out goodbyes are harder for everyone, especially your child. Say something warm, confident, and loving, then go. A clean goodbye signals to your child that you believe they're going to be in great hands. (Because they will be.)
Don't Linger
Once your child starts getting pulled into the energy of camp – meeting their friends, and saying goodbye – that's your cue. Lingering too long after that can pull them back into the goodbye, not forward into the adventure.
Have a Plan for Yourself
This one is important. Drop-off day is emotional for parents. Have something planned for after whether it’s a nice lunch, a drive or a call with a friend. Don't go home and sit in the quiet. Know what the camp’s schedule is for you connecting with your child after they arrive.
Trust the Camp
You chose your child’s summer home carefully. The staff has done this before. Your child is in good hands.
The Bottom Line
The best drop-offs are quick, warm, and full of confidence. Your child will remember the smile you left them with, not the parking lot and will come home with stories and friendships that will last a lifetime.
