Homesickness Resources

What it is, what it isn't, and how to actually help.

Homesickness is one of the most talked-about fears in camp and also one of the most misunderstood.

Here's what we know: almost every child misses home at some point. That's not a sign that something is wrong. It's a sign that they love their family, which is a very good thing.

What Homesickness Actually Looks Like

It's not always crying. Sometimes it shows up as stomachaches, low energy, not wanting to eat, or just seeming "off." Counselors are trained to recognize it and most camps have protocols in place for supporting the kids.

Here’s What Helps and What Doesn't

What helps:

  • Warm, cheerful letters and emails that express confidence in your child
  • Saying things like "You've got this" and "We can't wait to hear all about it"
  • Staying consistent in conversations

What Doesn't Help:

  • Letters that say "We miss you so much, the house is so quiet"
  • Promising to pick them up early "if it gets too hard" often gives kids an exit strategy when what they need is encouragement to push through
  • Calling camp constantly to check in

When to Be Concerned

Most homesickness resolves within the first week. If it's persisting, intensifying, or showing up alongside other signs of distress, talk to the camp directly. Camps have a staff member – often a camp mom or head counselor – specifically focused on this.

The Bottom Line

Homesickness is normal. How you respond to it matters. A child who pushes through it comes out the other side more resilient than when they arrived.
